Pickleball Rules

Single Players (1 On 1)

  1. Court: The court for singles play is the same as for doubles play, which is 20 feet wide and 44 feet long, with a net height of 36 inches at the sidelines and 34 inches at the center. The court is divided into left and right service courts and a non-volley zone, also known as the "kitchen."

  2. Serve: The serve must be made underhand and diagonally cross-court. The server must keep both feet behind the back line and serve the ball into the opposite service court. If the serve hits the net and lands in the proper service court, it is a let serve and the server gets another chance.

  3. Scoring: The game is played to 11 points, and you must win by two points. Points can only be scored by the serving player. If the score is tied at 10-10, play continues until one player wins by two points.

  4. Double Bounce Rule: In singles play, the player serving the ball must play their first shot off of a bounce. The receiving player must also play their first shot off of a bounce. After the ball has bounced once on each side, then both players may play the ball in the air or off a bounce.

  5. Non-Volley Zone: The non-volley zone is the area immediately in front of the net, and players cannot hit the ball in the air while standing in the zone. Players may enter the non-volley zone to play a ball that has bounced, but they must exit the zone before hitting the ball.

  6. Faults: A fault occurs when a player makes an error, such as hitting the ball out of bounds, failing to clear the net, or stepping into the non-volley zone to hit the ball.

  7. Let Serve: A let serve occurs when the ball hits the net on the serve but lands in the proper service court.

  8. Serving Order: The first serve of the game is determined by a coin toss, and the server continues to serve until they make an error. After that, the serve passes to the other player, and so on.

  9. Line Calls: Players are responsible for calling the lines on their side of the court. If the ball is called out, it is considered out. If there is a dispute, the players should replay the point.

  10. Double Hit: A player cannot hit the ball twice in a row, except in the case of a block at the net.

  11. Switching Sides: After each game, players should switch sides of the court. If a game goes into extra points, players will switch sides once a player reaches 6 points.

Double Players (2 On 2)

  1. Teams: Pickleball is typically played with two teams of two players each. One player on each team will serve the ball, while the other player will receive the serve and play the ball back and forth with the opposing team.

  2. The Serve: The serve must be made underhand and diagonally cross-court. The server must keep both feet behind the back line and serve the ball into the opposite service court. If the serve hits the net and lands in the proper service court, it is a let serve and the server gets another chance.

  3. Scoring: The game is played to 11 points, and you must win by two points. Points can only be scored by the serving team. If the score is tied at 10-10, play continues until one team wins by two points.

  4. Double Bounce Rule: Each team must play their first shot off of a bounce. After the ball has bounced once on each side, then both teams may play the ball in the air or off a bounce.

After that, the serve passes to the other team, and so on.

  9. Line Calls: Players are responsible for calling the lines on their side of the court. If the ball is called out, it is considered out. If there is a dispute, the players should replay the point.

  10. Double Hit: A player cannot hit the ball twice in a row, except in the case of a block at the net.

  11. Partner Communication: Players should communicate with each other during the game to avoid confusion and to coordinate their shots.

  12. Switching Sides: After each game, teams should switch sides of the court. If a game goes into extra points, teams will switch sides once a team reaches 6 points.

Note that these are the basic rules for playing pickleball in pairs. With these rules in mind, you and your partner should be able to play a fun and competitive game of pickleball.
